Big changes are underway as Meta, Snap, and Roblox step up their game to protect kids online in the UK. Following concerns raised by UK regulator Ofcom, these platforms are committing to tougher measures against online grooming. This matters because it means safer spaces for young users on popular apps.

Ofcom’s recent study highlighted that social networks weren’t doing enough to shield children from online harm. In response, Snap is rolling out new default settings to prevent adults from contacting kids they don’t know and introducing a new age assurance system by summer. Similarly, Meta is developing settings to hide teenagers’ follower lists and using AI to detect inappropriate DMs on Instagram. This move follows other efforts like Hulu profiles syncing with Disney+ to enhance user experience and control.

Meanwhile, Roblox is implementing age assurance measures to suggest age-appropriate games and give parents more control over chat features. While TikTok and YouTube haven’t made significant changes, they claim their platforms are already kid-safe. With these updates, platforms are finally catching up to Discord’s commitment to privacy with encryption.

Stay tuned for more updates as Ofcom continues to push for stricter online safety. Keep an eye on how other platforms might follow suit or if new regulations will change the digital landscape further.
