HDMI 2.0 or HDMI 2.1—does it really matter for your streaming setup? Short answer: not much, unless you’re a gamer. Here’s why.
Most of us have our entertainment centers set up and barely think about the cables connecting it all. HDMI cables, however, are crucial for sending audio and video from your devices to your screen. With 4K streaming becoming more popular, you might wonder if upgrading your cables is necessary. The good news is, for most streaming services, HDMI 2.0 is still plenty capable of delivering crisp 4K video at 60Hz. If you’re all about streaming your favorite shows, you probably don’t need to rush out for new cables just yet.
So when does HDMI 2.1 come into play? If you’re into gaming on a PS5 or high-end PC, you might want that upgrade. HDMI 2.1 can push 4K at 120Hz, giving gamers a smoother experience, especially if you’re engaging in competitive play. For most non-gamers, though, sticking with HDMI 2.0 will keep your movies and shows looking great.
Keep an eye on tech updates, especially if you’re looking for new gaming gear or a new console. New standards like HDMI 2.2 are on the horizon, promising even greater resolutions and refresh rates.
