Valve fans dreaming of snagging a more affordable Steam Machine might want to temper their expectations. Even though Valve is keen on making their gaming device cheaper, don’t expect a price drop any time soon.
In a chat with Digital Foundry, Valve engineers Pierre-Loup Griffais and Yazan Aldehayyat shared their hopes for lowering the steep $1,049 price tag of the Steam Machine. They emphasized that the device is meant to connect gamers, not break the bank. However, the ongoing component shortages and rising costs for gaming tech make an immediate price cut unlikely.
The engineers highlighted that a significant factor is the AI-driven RAM shortage, which might not ease up until 2028. This means cheaper Steam Machines are more of a long-term dream than a near-term reality. Aldehayyat was clear: while Valve wants to make the device more accessible, they can’t promise changes soon.
If you’re holding out for a lower price, it might be worth exploring other gaming options for now. Keep an eye on industry trends and announcements from Valve for any shifts in pricing.
