Valve’s brand-new Steam Controller is hitting the shelves this May, giving gamers something to cheer about despite delays in other projects. With the ongoing RAM crisis putting a hold on Valve’s Steam Machine, the controller is stepping out solo, much to the delight of fans.
Announced back in November alongside the Steam Machine and a standalone VR headset called Steam Frame, the Steam Controller is the only one of Valve’s new toys set to release soon. Since it doesn’t rely on RAM or storage, it dodged the delays plaguing its siblings. If you’re curious about the controller’s price tag, check out our take on whether it’s really worth $99.
The Steam Controller’s design borrows from the development of the Steam Deck, incorporating a familiar layout and a second thumbstick to enhance gameplay. Valve engineer Jeremy Slocum shared that the team wanted to fill a gap for gamers who dock their Steam Decks but need a comfortable controller to game from the couch. Meanwhile, if you’re wondering about the Steam Machine’s delay, you might find the reasons similar to when Valve awaited better RAM prices.
So mark your calendars for May 4th, and keep an eye out for more announcements from Valve. Who knows, maybe another exciting piece of gaming gear will surprise us soon!
