Italy just scored a big win in the fight against streaming piracy by shutting down the Cinemagoal app. This matters because it proves that pirate apps are still on the radar and authorities aren’t letting up.
The Guardia di Finanza, Italy’s financial police, led a massive crackdown involving over 100 searches across the country. Cinemagoal was infamous for streaming content from platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and Spotify without permission. The app cleverly bypassed security checks, offering illegal access to thousands for a yearly fee between $46 and $151, often paid in hard-to-track cryptocurrencies.
While the financial damage caused by Cinemagoal reached an estimated $350 million, the crackdown is also a warning to its first 1,000 users who now face potential fines. This move follows other global efforts to curb piracy, like when popular sites such as Popcorn Time and Streameast were taken down. As piracy methods evolve, so do methods to combat them.
Keep an eye out for more crackdowns and remember to stick to legal streaming options. Meanwhile, check out how Apple TV is expanding its lineup or explore Spotify’s latest features to keep your streaming legit and enjoyable.
