Netflix is upping its accessibility game by adding American Sign Language (ASL) interpretations to a bunch of kids’ shows and movies. This matters because it’s making entertainment more inclusive for young viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Teaming up with SignUp Media, Netflix is rolling out ASL interpretations for 73 titles, including hits like Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 and Pokémon Horizons. Even blockbuster movies like Spider-Man: Homecoming are getting the ASL treatment. This collaboration uses a Google Chrome extension, which pops up the interpreter in a separate window, marking a shift from the typical in-app option other streamers use. It’s a cool step forward, especially since research shows that captions don’t quite cut it for kids, impacting their literacy scores.
This isn’t the first time SignUp Media has been in the spotlight. Earlier this year, they made waves with The Oscars Project, offering ASL interpretations for all best picture nominees.
